Hell’s Out for Recess !  

What could be more apt for a hell saying that the above illustration from Milton’s Paradise Lost featuring Gustave Doré’s engraving of a huffing and puffing Satan leaning against an earth rock, trying to catch his breath, after having been tossed out of heaven for being a baaaaaaaaaaad angel. Glenn Lario recently sent this email:

Greetings from Vancouver Island where the frost has been on the palm trees lately.

I wanted to pass along something my Dad always said and now I naturally catch myself repeating. A lady at the bank overheard it yesterday and burst out laughing at it. She handed out the $150.00 I asked for to go Christmas shopping and, when I accepted it, I said, “Yippee! Hell’s out for recess now!”

The phrase “Hell’s out for recess” was something my Dad always said when things were going to become uncontrollable and I suppose that it stems from the term “Hell is breaking loose.”

My Dad, Roy Lario, was born around Arcola , Saskatchewan , in 1907. He gave me many things but one that I like best is “Hell’s out for recess.”
