“The most of our winter days are fair ones . . .
and methought ‘twas pity any of them should be lost . . .
To sleep all winter more befits a bear than a man . ”
Cotton Mather
American Puritan minister and author, 1663-1728

These are graphic felicities whose subjects are chiefly wintery. But some are merely
appealing designs I wished to share with you, extracts from the curio cabinet of old
woodcuts, engravings, world-renowned paintings, posters, patent medicine labels,
cartoons, my own winnowings of the iconic debris of our civilization.
But it is much more fun than that last sentence makes it sound.
