A British caricaturist's satirical view of French women's clothing of the Directoire era, named for the Directoire, body of five men that held executive power in France from 1795-1799.
Directoire style featured picturesque hats and a décolleté gown usually with short sleeves and a skirt hanging straight down like a tube from a waistline just under the bust. The exposure of most of milady's bosom horrified some English visitors to Paris in 1800. Shocked Brits could only guess what portion of a French woman's anatomy might next be exposed. The English caricaturist offers his supposition, centered on madame's glutei maximi.
